Hosted by the Mississauga Sports Council, in partnership with the City of Mississauga, this initiative of the City of Mississauga Sport Plan, is an exciting event that provides Mississauga Sport Groups with learning and networking opportunities designed to support the success and development of their grassroots organizations.
Designed to support our grassroots sports groups, topics range from Governances, Administration and Coaching with a view to supporting skills development/refreshers for officials and volunteers looking to play a greater role in their organizations development.

This session will focus on the unique and distinct roles of board members including the Chairperson, Executive Director and Executive and members at large. Topics of discussion will include:
What are the 3 hats worn by board members?
The role of board members in strategic planning and fundraising.
The 3 duties of every board member.
Recruitment, orientation and how to best review every board member before re-election.
Best practices in effective board and AGM meetings and common mistakes.
Financial Management - Just the Facts!
As part of your fiduciary duties as a club member, you have a commitment to understanding the financial documents that are brought forward at board meetings. Comprehensive budgeting and sound financial management & reporting are 2 of the cornerstones of an effective sports group. Having a solid understanding of basic financial terms and techniques will get you headed in the right direction and help keep your organization on a solid footing.

A Sport group exists because it meets a need in the community. It started with a dream but often struggles as it needs long term sustainable funding to grow. In this session, we’ll explore the world of fundraising and discuss best practices and down to earth strategies that will help to support your organizations fundraising efforts. Topics will include:

Stewarding a donor
Major gift development
Your elevator talk
Boards have a critical role to play in fund development, yet many board members don’t feel they have the experience or confidence to be effective in promoting their organization. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn and develop a culture of fund development within your organization.

It’s important that your organizations “road map” is clear and up to date. In this session we will discuss the some of the best practices and principles to enable your group to add 3 tools to its belt to develop and maintain its strategic plan. In addition, topics for discussion include:

This session will provide an understanding of how strategic planning supports capacity building and increases engagement/participation in your group.
Going for the Grant
Community Grant experts talk about the strategies and challenges of applying for grants. The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) and City of Mississauga (CM) share their extensive knowledge and answer questions related to grant funding opportunities for grass roots sport organizations. This session will include an overview of OTF’s newly launched Investment Strategy, the Granting Streams, assessment process and the new application process; along with a CM update on its Grant opportunities; group discussion; and Q&A.
