MSC Annual Report 2018

MSC ANNUAL REPORT 2018 - PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Over the past 35 years, the Mississauga Sports Council has taken on a variety of roles and responsibilities. The focus on promoting and developing sports and encouraging community participation has remained a core focal point of the organization.

2018 proved to be a very eventful year.  The 25th Annual Mississauga Sports Week – Spring Summer was another action-packed week. From showcasing the Steelheads and Raptors 905, to hosting a Volunteer Engagement – Succession Planning seminar, there were a variety of celebrations and community engagement ops. The Sports & Camps Show at Erin Mills Town Centre was a big hit and the Mississauga Senior Games Meet and Greet at the newly opened Active Adult Centre was an exhilarating kick-off for the venue and our local District 20’s preparation for the Ontario Summer 55+ Games being hosted in Mississauga. Sports Week Fall Winter provided MSC a wonderful platform to showcase our community sports from the new Steelheads season home opener to the hockey, basketball, swimming, ringette and many other sports initiatives. Both weeks cover a full year of our grassroots; Celebrating the Spirt of Sport!

We thank the City of Mississauga for its ongoing support and funding enabling MSC to fulfill its mission and be dedicated to the promotion and development of sports in Mississauga.

We thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support and funding. The “Training at the Grassroots” project provided for sport group, athlete, coach, official and administrative engagement and learnings that have informed our strategic planning, programs and services going forward.

March Break community outreach included the Hall of Fame Roadshow at Erin Mills Town Centre (EMTC) celebrating their March Ice-Breaker Indoor Skating Event. Thanks to EMTC for collecting used skates and equipment and donating to the community through MSC’s Hazel McCallion Sports Hall of Fame Phys Ed program.

On June 13th we hosted the 44th Annual Mississauga Sports Dinner. It was an honour to introduce the Marg and Gord Hughes Volunteer Engagement Award, recognizing exceptional volunteer work – City of Mississauga being its first recipient. Congratulations to the 39 award recipients.

MSC administration was focused on funding and the City of Mississauga’s (CM) new Multi-Year Agreement application. The process provided for alignment with CM Strategic Pillars and a foundation for MSC’s ongoing Strategic Planning management. We also completed the CM’s inaugural on-line registry program application and approval process.

We finished 2018 with a flurry of activity as we re-located our office to 5500 Rose Cherry Place to support the CM relocation of Guest Services into 5600 Rose Cherry Place from the Central Library. We appreciate the support from City staff in preparing for and executing the move. We are appreciative of the community outreach opportunity provided by the CM Tourism group to host our Sports Hall of Fame Road Show in the Great Hall of the Civic Centre during the Rogers Hometown Hockey Extravaganza at Celebration Square. It was a special opportunity to engage with the community while showcasing our hockey legacy, including special exhibits honouring Mississauga’s: Women in Hockey, Hockey Officials, Grassroots Ice Sports (including Hockey, Sledge Hockey & Ringette), and Don Cherry’s jackets

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers; our sponsors and partners; the Ontario Trillium Foundation; and the City of Mississauga - Mayor and Council, Paul Mitcham, Shari Lichterman, Kelly Reichheld and their staff for their continued support, funding and resources including meeting rooms and space for the Sports Hall of Fame.

Claudina Sula, President
